History

Built at the start of the 17th Century when the role of the building was somewhat different from the restaurant

and tea rooms format it takes today.  this was the

old courthouse and headquarters of the public administration.  In the basement of the building are

the old cells which housed miscreants such as drunks and vagrants.

The building did use to serve food, but only as last

suppers. That’sright – Y Sospan used to house local

 goals.(Jails)

Depicted on our walls is a scene of various ways that prisoners were tried during events such as the Witch

Trials – where drowning was used. The courts believed if the women drowned, then they were considered as

mortals – if they flew out of the water, then theywere witches...

Also on our walls are various pieces of our history – including news reports of jail breaks – something that

adds to the wonderful

character that is Y Sospan
